Blood pressure is the relationship between the force of the blood flow and the resistance of the blood vessels. It is important to have blood pressure or life cannot be sustained, but hypertension which is not controlled can cause serious health issues. This is called Uncontrolled Hypertension in medical parlance.

What actually makes hypertension so serious is it can be a silent killer, it killed my cousin at age 39, and no one even knew he was ill. This is why it is so important to have your blood pressure checked and if it is high, have this controlled. Even in the beginning if hypertension causes no symptoms, it can cause long term health issues and these need to be avoided. The most important of these complications is heart disease such as heart attacks and congestive heart failure, kidney failure, stroke and various diseases of the arteries.

Hypertension is measured by a blood pressure cuff and recorded as two numbers. The higher number is ‘Systolic’ and the lower ‘Diastolic’, it is read as 120/80 mm Hg. Systolic is the pressure the heart generates when it pumps, diastolic is the pressure of blood within the arteries between heartbeats. At a consistently elevated reading of 140/90 mm Hg or higher, hypertension is diagnosed.

There are as may as 60 million people in the US suffering from this condition and it is the 2nd ‘ most reason for doctor visits in the US. Premature death from heart attacks has been directly linked to uncontrolled hypertension, it is also responsible for disability, kidney failure and other serious health concerns. Just looking at the amount of people in the US who have this condition, it indicates 1 in 4 adults over the age of 18 years. However, don’t start panicking, help is at hand and there are many different ways of controlling hypertension.
