Dwarf hamsters are perfect animals for those looking to have a sociable, cuddly, and small tinker toy of a pet. They usually vary from 4 cm to 10 cm. For the first four days, the pup looks very white, bordering to transparent. Only after the fourth day that the pup would start having some color. The shade would be a little darker. At about a week, the pups will begin to have fur. However, their eyes remains closed.
During the first ten days of a pup, make sure that you do not touch the baby. Do not worry if the cage smells a little bad; just make sure that there is enough food and fresh water for the mother. Just remove the leftovers, but do not entirely clean the cage. You may try wiping some parts with rags wet with disinfectants.
At the same time, during these first few days, the mother is very protective of the pups. They might not like you handling or even touching their babies. This goes with saying that the mothers may prefer that they want to be left alone with the babies.
Within two weeks, the babies would need to be handled a few times already. This would ensure that they are tamed. This would also help them be accredited to be handled. At the same time, learn how to be sociable.
During this time, you may also introduce drinking from the bottle. It can also be introduced a little earlier like in ten days. Around this period, you may also consider moving them to another cage. Make sure also that the male dwarf hamster (male partner) is moved so that the mother will not be pregnant again too soon.
In case the mother is pregnant, remove the babies at about 20 days after birth. If the mother is not, you may remove the babies after 4 weeks. Thus, you may also have to separate the then (almost) fully grown dwarf hamster since they are also ready for mating by about that age.
From the time that you are able to handle the baby hamsters (about 10 days) until fully grown, make sure that they are well supplied of oatmeal, oats, bird seeds (small ones) and wheat germ. Before the water bottle stage, make sure also that you feed them with those that contain water like red apples and slices of cucumbers. As time pass, the mother would actually nurse the babies less, so they should be introduced to solid foods to compensate nutrition. During this period, growth and development is at its peak.
Until they are fully grown, the best way is to make sure that the cages are cleaned. Only at 4 weeks or older that baby dwarf hamsters can be sold or given away.
