Fibromyalgia is a real medical condition. All-over muscle pain and the pain may vary from mild to severe. The muscle pain from this condition is one of the most common types of chronic widespread pain. This medical condition may be hard to diagnose. They may not know what is wrong with them or what is causing their pain.

There is a FDA-approved medicine for fibromyalgia. LYRICA is the first FDA-approved medicine to treat fibromyalgia in adults, 18 years and older. This helps with the pain of the body. But this may not help everyone.

What are the possible causes of fibromyalgia? Causes are still not known. Possibly changes in the central nervous system may be liable. Nerves can get damaged. And damaged nerves sometimes send extra signals that healthy nerves would not and therefore may cause pain. Peripheral emotional distress, or viruses change the way the brain perceives pain. Causes are still not known.

What causes nerve damage? Possibly a viral or bacterial infection, even from physical damage to the body or a body part.

We may not know a lot about what causes fibromyalgia, but we certainly know the symptoms. People with fibromyalgia can experience many symptoms. Some symptoms may include chronic broad muscle pain, morning stiffness, fatigue, muscle soreness, aches or dull pain, and of course sleeping problems. Many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia are also found in other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

According to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a person must have widespread pain lasting for at least three months. Plus pain in at least 11 of 18 parts of the body called "tender points."

What are some of the Fibromyalgia facts? This mostly affects women. Men can have fibromyalgia, too. This is not a psychological condition. People with this condition experience a heightened sensitivity to pain. Exercise, such as walking, or gently stretching muscles may help ease the pain. Of course, before starting any exercise program please consult with your doctor.

Fibromyalgia can be treated. Family physicians, general internists, pain specialist, neurologist and rheumatologists are the doctors who typically treat fibromyalgia. Ask your healthcare insurance provider for a list of doctors in your plan in a location near you. They can tell you what steps you need to take before you see a specialist.

Find a doctor if you think you may have fibromyalgia. Get a referral from a friend, family member, or coworker they like and trust. Ask the doctor about his or her experience with this ailment.

Be prepared for your doctor visit. Know if you have been suffering from your pain for 3 months or more, if you feel pain on both sides of the body above and below the waist, how many days have pain and fatigue interfereed with your daily living, know the areas of your body where you feel pain. Have you not been able to sleep, concentrate, or work? What prescription medicines have you tried and did not provide any relief? There are many ways to be prepared by knowing why you are there at the doctors office, be specific as possible.
