Eating better is one way to lose weight, but it is also a great way to be healthier. Here are 6 tips to improve your diet and your health as a result.

1. Eat lean protein. These are cuts of meat that are white without fat marbled through them. Soy products are also lean protein, beans, and 1% cheese for those who are vegetarians. Good lean meat choices are chicken, eggs or egg whites, very lean beef and fish. Eating more fish will ensure that you get essential omega 3 oils into your diet.

2. Avoid sugary foods. Sugar is just not good for you, so the more you can avoid foods that are high in sugar, the better. If you eat large amounts of sugar, your body just can not process it and you will end up storing it as fat.

3. Stay away from processed foods. Processed foods are full of sodium (salt), and too much salt is very bad for you. It can lead to high blood pressure. Salt is a necessary mineral, so it should not be absolutely eliminated, but you need to be careful of how much you ingest.

4. Eat more fruit and vegetables. If you can eat 6 – 8 servings per day, this is ideal. Eating more fruits and vegetables reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. They also reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, coronary heart disease and help to protect against bone loss.

5. Have at least 3 servings of dairy products each day. Dairy products build and maintain bone mass and help to prevent osteoporosis. It is important to choose low fat dairy products because dairy products that contain more fat will raise bad cholesterol levels.

6. Eat whole grains, avoid processed ones. Whole grains are things like oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat flour. Processed grains are items such as white bread, white flour and white rice. Try to avoid eating "white" grains. Whole grains help to add fiber which aids in the digestion and processing of foods through your system. They serve to reduce constipation, aid weight loss and prevent coronary heart disease.

Eating healthyier will save you from many health problems down the road. Always choose food that is closest to its natural source. In other words, packaged and processed foods are so far removed from being natural that they should be avoided at all costs. Always choose low fat, low sugar, lean products that are fresh. Once you start to improve your diet, your overall health will improve as well.
