We all know that hamsters need a variety of different toys to lead a truly full life. These items are crucial for a couple reasons. The most obvious one is entertainment, but do not discount the health factor. One item that keeps our little pets healthy is the hamster chew toy. Hamsters need to chew on things. It's necessary for the wellness of their teeth and gums. There are a few things to consider when deciding on a chew toy for your pet.

The biggest decision you have to make revolves around material. What should a chew toy be made out of? Most people believe that these toys should have made out of either wood or cardboard. There are strong cases for both of these materials.

If you want to go with a wood product, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. Most woods are fine for hamsters to chew on but there are some exceptions. A lot of people feel that a rodent should not chew on evergreen woods like cedar. I do not know if this is true but it's probably a good idea to play it safe. One thing that should definitely be avoided is wood covered in pesticides or toxic materials. If you have any doubts about the quality of wood you're using, just play it safe. Get yourself to a pet store and buy a wood sewing toy specifically made for pets.

Another popular material found in chew toys is cardboard. Giving your hamster simple everyday cardboard to chew is a cost effective way to please your pet. Some people feel that the inks and glues found in typical cardboard products could have been harmful to an animal's health but this is completely unfounded. I've been giving my hamster toilet paper rolls for a long time and he's never shown any ill effects. The neat thing about these rolls is they actually double as a tunnel type toy for your pet.

If you're willing to spend a bit of money on your pet, there is another option for you. Rabbits like chew toys as well and some of these products can be used with hamsters as well. Next time you're at the pet store, look for a small Willow Ball. Your hamster will love you for it.
