There are a number of different hamster illnesses that can affect your pet.
It’s important for you to familiarize yourself with a few of these various dwarf illnesses so that you know what to do, should your little dwarf hamster gets sick.
Many times, there will be very distinct signs that you have a dwarf hamster has an illness and in some cases, it may be necessary for you to get emergency help in order to save your pet.
Here are a few very bad signs for you to look out for, as well as some that are not quite as much of an emergency.
One of the first things that you should look out for is any type of digestive problems that your hamster may have.
If you notice hamster diarrhea occurring, in which the pellets are mushy, wet or lack the mucus that they typically have, you may have a problem on your hands.
This type of illness is often referred to as wet tail, not because it is what causes it but because of the diarrhea problems, the rear and tail of your hamster will often be very wet.
If you observe that your hamster is hunched over and obviously in pain then this is a very serious situation that needs taking care of as quickly as possible.
Anytime that you notice hamster diarrhea, always make sure that you keep your eye closely on him and see if it turns into a more serious dwarf hamster illness.
Another type of hamster illness that I would like to discuss is salmonella. This is the same type of problem that humans have, and it comes from eating infected food. It is always important for you to make sure that any food that you feed your hamster is prepared by clean hands on a clean cutting board if you are using one.
Do not allow the hamster food to sit in a cage for too long, as it could develop this if it has had any exposure to salmonella. Make sure that you keep the cage clean and always wash your hands before and after handling your hamster.
Salmonella can lead to sudden death or a serious degenerative disease.
Another problem that may be seen, but is not as prevalent is if you see your hamster swollen. The swelling that is in the hamster will often be recognized whenever a problem with constipation occurs, but it can also be a matter of pregnancy if the hamster is a female.
Ruling out hamster pregnancy could lead to the possibility that you do have a case of constipation on your hands. It would be necessary for you to get help from your veterinarian if that is the case.
So as you can see, there are many different types of hamster illnesses that need to be looked for whenever you own one of these pets. Being able to identify these hamster illnesses early and act on them is one of the best ways for you to be up to take care of your animal and to make sure that they are around for the a few years.
