If you aren’t ready to go under the knife to lose a few stubborn pounds, a cosmetic surgeon may recommend mesotherapy as an alternative to liposuction. Mesotherapy injections have been administered to patients in Europe and South America for several decades, and are designed to break down fatty tissues and cellulite in the body permanently. The injections have been available in the United States for several years, but do pose some risks along with their benefits.

Here’s a close look at how mesotherapy works, and what pros and cons you need to know about before undergoing this type of treatment:

Mesotherapy Basics

Mesotherapy is one of several non-invasive body contouring procedures that involves injecting fatty tissues with a special compounds. This formula consists of plant extracts, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes that work together to break down fat cells and eliminate the cells from the body naturally. The injection also contains anesthetics and medications to reduce pain and enhance the feeling process.

Mesotherapy is now a standardized procedure, and only the ingredients and compounds in the injection have received FDA approval. Under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938, the FDA has only been able to approve certain prescription and non-prescription drugs and active ingredients. Mesotherapy needs to be administered only by a licensed doctor who also has ACCME Approved Continuing Medical Education Credits (CMEs).

With mesotherapy, a series of injections are administered just below the surface of the skin. These injections can be administered to the thighs, buttocks, knees and abdomen, and within a few days, the fat cells begin to break down. In most cases, a series of injections are needed to achieve significant results.

Key Benefits of Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy offers several benefits for people that do not want to undergo surgery to lose a few ‘vanity’ pounds. Some of the key benefits of mesotherapy include:

  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Does not require general anesthesia
  • Can be performed on an outpatient basis
  • Produces even results
  • Stimulates better circulation and blood flow to the treated area
  • May help to relieve muscle spasms in some people
  • Offers long-lasting results as long as the person maintains a healthy diet and lifestyle

Drawbacks of Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is not without its risks, so it’s important to understand all of the drawbacks of this procedure. Some of the risks and problems associated with mesotherapy include:

  • Burning sensation during and after the procedure is common
  • Redness and swelling for several days after the procedure
  • Can cost between $300 to $600+ per session
  • Noticeable bruising
  • Allergic reaction to the chemicals and compounds injected
  • Risk of infection at the injection site
  • Possibility of permanent swelling and lumps under the skin
  • Excessive irritation and inflammation of the skin and tissues

Mesotherapy is not suitable for all people, but does offer several benefits when performed by an experienced and licensed physician.
