Before you purchase your new pet hamster, it is a great idea to go out and figure out exactly what supplies your new hamster will need. If you are new to having a pet hamster, going to your local pet shop is a good first step. They should be able to fill you in on exactly what you need. The internet is also a great source of information and can prepare you with a list to take for your hamster supplies.

The first and most important item for your pet hamster will be his new house. There are many types of hamster cages on the market these days. You will want one that first, is escape proof so your hamster will not get out. Second, you want something that is very easy to clean. You will need to clean the cage often and having something that has hard to reach places will make this difficult.

The next item on your hamster supplies list should be some form of bedding. If possible it is best to get aspen or a fiber based bedding. Try to avoid pine and cedar wood chips as these are proven to be unsafe.

Every hamster will need some sort of toys to keep them busy. One essential is the hamster wheel. Hamsters really like to run and having this will provide hours of excitation and fun. There are also a variety of chew toys that will be at the pet store as well. Make sure you get several of these for your pet hamster.

The last items on your hamster supplies list should be food and something to hold the food and water. You will want to make sure your pet hamster has a bowl that is solid and can not be easily tipped over. As for a water bottle one that is stainless steel and hangs is ideal. A bowl will be easily tipped. There are several kinds of food that are available. The type of food that is best for your hamster can be determined by talking to someone at the pet store. They should be able to help you find the most nutritious items for your breed.

It is best to have all the hamster supplies you need before your new pet hamster comes home. This way the hamster will have everything ready for when he moves in and it will reduce the stress of having several different homes / items.
