Do you know chickens make great pets at home? Some people have never thought of getting chicks as pets and raising them at their home backyard. A lot of household still go for dogs, cats, fishes, hamster etc as pets and never know the benefits of having their own bantams. Chickens are low maintenance animals. One of the biggest benefits of raising your own fowl is the fresh organic eggs they produce every week.
However, due to their small size, chickens are exposed to many urban predators such as cats, dogs, large rats, raccoon etc. One way of keeping them safe and healthy is by building a chicken coop for them to live in. One of the best coop designs that you can use is a chicken tractor.
Chicken tractor is great if you have half a dozen or so chickens in your backyard. The most common chicken tractor design is an A-frame enclosure. As its name suggest, it is built with an A-frame support structure and covered with steel wire mesh.
The benefits this chicken coop design is its mobility. A chicken tractor is without a floor and can be moved from one location to another. For better mobility, you can even fit wheels at the base. Since there is no bottom, the chicken in the coop can have access to fresh forage, including grass, weeds, and bugs. As an added benefit, the chicken dropping will fall on the grass and acts like a fertilizer.
It is best to move the chicken tractor from one location to another every couple of days to give the chicken access to fresh grass. This will also give the existing grass to recover after being consistently trampled on. This is a natural way of fertilizing your backyard and at the same time keeping your chicken happy and healthy.
