Cryptorchidism is a common cause of infertility in men. It is a condition that is characterized by the failure of the testes to descend. During child development in the womb, the testes develop inside the belly at the upper part of the kidney. However, at about the seventh month of life in the womb, the testes descend from there down to the scrotum outside the body.
The reason why the testes is outside the body is to maintain the optimum temperature required for effective production, maturation and survival of the sperm. The body temperature is higher and thus could reduce or completely halt the production of or destroy the sperm cells. Therefore if the testes fail to come down to the scrotum, the chances of such trapped testes performing optimally is grossly limited and can give rise to infertility in male.
Sperm production in male starts from puberty, 14 years and in case of maldecent, like cryptorchidism, it is necessary that the testes be sought for wherever trapped in the body and be brought down to the scrotum, otherwise the reproductive future of such one is not guaranteed, This condition can be successfully corrected through surgery, if done before puberty.
Mump Orchitis:
This is a remote cause of infertility in men. It is such that one hardly links the problem to infection during childhood. It is a sequaele of infection called mumps, a swelling condition that occur around the jaw (cheek) in children. The infection, if not treated, can spread down to the testes to halt spermatogenesis, which of course manifests as infertility in men after puberty.
