Many people have heard that they should be taking omega supplements to stay healthy. It is a well-known fact that our bodies benefit from omega boosts, which can help our brains, heart and immune system stay healthy longer. But what most people do not realize is that we only really need to boost our intake of omega 3. So if you are taking expensive omega combination supplements that include omega 3, 6 and 9, you are not only wasting your money. But you could be poisoning your health as well – not improving it.
The simple facts are these. Our own bodies produce omega 9. It is also absorbed when you eat nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil, which should all be a regular part of your diet. On the other hand, omega 6 is consumed when we eat vegetable oils, meat, eggs and dairy products. And we should be trying to reduce the amount of omega 6 that enters our bodies because diets high in omega 6 and low in omega 3 have been linked to a wide range of medical conditions including heart disease, depressions, allergies and even cancer. Our bodies can not produce omega 3 themselves. It must be obtained from the food we eat and the best sources are oily fish like herring, tuna, salmon, mackerel and a fish called the Hoki, which lives primarily in the clean uncontaminated waters of New Zealand
Now, unless you eat at least four good size portions of oily fish a week, it is almost certain you are not getting enough omega 3 in your diet. And your health will suffer in the long term with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and arthritis. All of these are common conditions of old age. The other way to get the correct amount of omega 3 that your body needs is by taking fish oil supplements. Basically there are three types. The best is pharmaceutical grade fish oil, which has the lowest levels possible of pollutants like PCBs, mercury and lead. This is extremely important as these can poison your body so you must always only choose refined pharmaceutical grade supplements. The fish oil is highly concentrated, has the highest levels of EPA and DHA and there are no fishy after-effects either. These are the best supplements to take.
The next best supplements are known as 'concentrates'. But these have much lower levels of the important nutrients EPA and DHA, so you actually have to take more of them to get the same benefits. Although you might think you are saving money in the long term it is actually the opposite. Lastly, there are the basic no-frills fish oil supplements but these have such low levels of EPA and DHA, that they are basically useless. They are not giving your body the omega 3 nutrients it really needs so you are wasting your time and money eating them. You need at least 500mg of EPA per day plus DHA and these cheap fish oil supplements do not give you that. After years of research, I have found the best fish oil supplements that are uncontaminated and give you the correct amount of EPA and DHA omega 3 your body needs daily. You'll find out more about them on my website.
