There are many kinds of dwarf hamster breeders out there. Some do it full time while others do it part time. Some put their hamsters up for sale to interested owners, while others just do it for their own personal enjoyment. So why are there so many different levels of breeders? Well, breeding is more complicated than you might think. Good dwarf hamster breeders usually take time in choosing which hamsters they bring together and sometimes are even looking for that one particular hamster to breed. But not all breeders are so zealous. While some have years of experience under their belt, others are just starting out, so do not expect all breeders to have great hamsters.
Dwarf hamster breeders have actually been around for a long, long time. Ever since dwarf hamsters have been in captivity, they've been bred. And because they have very quick life spans, breeders can breed generations of these guys very quickly. This makes it easier to breed specific qualities and hits. This is the reason there so many different patterns of these hamsters today (including sapphire colored ones).
But a cool color pattern is not the only thing breeders look for (although it is one of the main ones). Dwarf hamster breeders (the good ones at least) also look at health factors and behavior practices. They usually do not breed hamsters that have any illnesses (or an unusual number of toes) and tend to breed only the healthier hamsters they own. In addition to that, good breeders tend to avoid breeding hamsters that are always fighting and causing trouble. Hamsters that are tame and friendly are usually favored to be made into proud parents.
So if you are looking to adopt a dwarf hamster, a breeder is definitely a good place to look. And if you locate a good one, there's a good chance you'll soon find your new pet hamster.
