There are various species of the Dwarf hamster. But they are all lovable just the same and are the perfect home pets. Dwarf hamsters are small hamsters, unlike the large Syrian hamster specie. But being small in size does not mean they are easier to care to.
These miniature hamsters are very jumpy and are known to make a quick-getaway. They can hide in the most unnoticed places as they can fit into almost anything. Keeping them secure is of utmost importance.
These creatures normally remain in underground burrows. Tamed ones however can live in a plastic version, which comes in different sizes. It is essential that you look for the ones made for little rodents instead of the ones for hamsters as the latter are too big. Other options include aquariums and cages with tightly crossed wires.
The Dwarf hamster is no different from the standard hamster in his need for active activity. Did you know that an average hamster will run for five miles on the running wheel? You can get your Dwarf a running wheel made specifically for the Dwarf hamster, which is widely available in pet stores.
Dwarf hamsters, like regular hamsters, like to burrow and make nests. So providing them with a substrate from wood shavings will be a treat for them. Remember to clean and empty the substrate once a week. Do not use materials like cedar and pine for the substrate as they make breathing difficult for hamsters. Make sure you use a dust-free and absorbent material.
If you can not provide fresh substrate on a weekly basis, give your hamster soft paper products that they can easily shred. Being the recorative creatures that they are, they will greatly appreciate being able to have their own sanctums.
Some hamster eating habits you should know about are that they like to pile their food in their nests yet still want to be given fresh supplies of food and water continuously. They have large appetites despite their tiny frames and eat a lot of dried fruits, vegetables, seeds and pellets. This is due to the fact that they burn a lot of energy because they are constantly moving around.
Just like teeth babies, hamsters' teeth keep growing and so the need to chew on almost everything, which is damaging to their teeth. Satisfy their urge by providing soft wood chew toys instead of plastic ones.
Dwarf hamsters are such great pets and require little maintenance, which is well worth your time. All you have to do is make sure that their homes and accessories are disinfected once a week with soap and water. Avoid chemical solutions as those will cause more harm to your pets than good. Remember that substrate must only be placed on dry cages, so wipe your cages thoroughly after you rinse them. Now was not that easy?
