All hamsters can qualify as favorite pets, excluding those rare certain species that are aggressive. The dwarf hamster is often considered an ideal pet for all the hamster lovers because they are definitely fantastic and amicable creatures. Hamsters demand care and proper nourishment regardless of the species, be it the dwarf hamster or the Syrian species. However, a difference that should be noted is that the former is much smaller compared to the latter.
They might attempt to escape swiftly although they are regarded as shy, reserved, and anxious species. Their small body enables them to get through even the smallest of the holes or the cracks. In the wildlife, they dig deep tunnels from the earth’s soil. But in detention, they find solace in the presence of plastic habitats, which are usually available in pet stores. Getting these artificial habitats that are smaller in size is the best gift an owner can give to his or her pet. They find it tough to climb and to live in a bigger cage. Other remarkable habitats for these species are the wire cage and the aquarium tank. Wheels can be attached to the cages to enhance their flair for movement. This fact is also justified by reports. A study revealed that they can run up to five miles clinging in these wheels. So, owners will have to provide smaller wheels for these dwarfs.
Special materials called substrate, which are absorbing and dust-free, should be supplied to maintain their burrowing instincts. Wood shavings are the most preferred element of substrate. Meanwhile, products that are based on cedar and pine are usually not considered as they may cause some respiratory problems in pets. Every week, the substrate material has to be completely replenished, as the pets like using substrate in making nests. They can use paper towels, cotton, tissues or shredded papers in creating nests. Because of their compact structure, the nesting box is a preferred nesting place.
Because of their extraordinary metabolic activity, the amount of food taken in by the dwarf hamsters is much more than the amount an ordinary Syrian hamster can usually take in. The dwarf hamsters like to consume dried fruits, pellets, different kinds of seeds, and vegetables. They normally keep some amount of food as reserves in their nests, instead of in the bowls. But, the owner should not be contented with this. Everyday, fresh fruits and a fresh supply of water must be provided to the pets so they will grow healthy and happy. Toys made up of soft wood, or popularly known as chew toys, should be provided for their gnawing tendencies. The hamsters normally possess a natural urge to bite something as their teeth keep on growing. But, the alternative set-up can lead to resistance of this temptation. Plastic toys are ignored because of their possible effects on their teeth.
Before putting a new stock of substrate, the owner has to wash the cage and its supplements at least once. All the accessories in the cage should be properly rinsed off using soft chemicals rather than hard chemicals that would make them feel awkward and may foster improper behavioral pattern. In rinsing, a water solution that is prepared by mixing water with soap powder can be used. A new serving of substrate can be placed after washing but drying should be done later. The pride of owning an adorable species makes you forget the dedicated efforts needed in nourishing them.
