Dwarfs life span is only for 1 to 2 years. They may begin to show signs of aging by the time they are 1 year old. They also become sexually mature at 30 days but will only begin breeding when they are between 60 to 90 days old. Some breeds, like the Roborovskis, may be unpredictable as they are known to have their pups between 4 to 18 months. So you have to be observant if you plan on breeding dwarf hamsters.
The incubation period for baby dwarfs is between 18 to 30 days. It’s actually 21 days average for all breeds but 30 days for Roborovskis. With most dwarf hamsters, there is always a chance that the pair would engage in another sexual activity after 24 hours of giving birth. When breeding dwarf hamsters, we should try to avoid this. The female needs to recuperate before engaging in any physical activity after giving birth. If you want your mother dwarfs to be able to produce more pups, give her a break. Just before giving birth, some female dwarf hamsters would chase the male out of the nest. For some pet owners, they look at this as a form of fighting. But in reality, the female is just giving the future daddy some “bachelor time”. After this break, the father becomes as valuable part the labor.
But Djugarian (Campbell) dwarf hamsters are not as lucky. Male Djugarian hamsters do not have “bachelor time”. They are known to be paws-on dads. Campbell males would help in pulling out the pup from the birth canal, open their airways and even lick off birth membranes. Campbells are born in very cold areas. This is the3 reason why, as some would say, male Campbells stay with his wife in the burrow before she gives birth. It is a natural instinct for the male to keep his family warm.
The most rewarding stage in breeding dwarf hamster is seeing the new born litter. Although at this stage they do not have fur and their eyes are always closed and hear, they still look extremely cute. they move themselves with the use of their front feet. You should never try to pick it up even if it strays away from the nest. Let the mother hamster do that. The danger of touching a new born dwarf hamster is the mother might abandon or even eat it.
