There are several different eye strengthening exercises but the common theme running with most of the preliminary ones is that training your eyes or staring are the most damaging things we can do to our eyes and so the exercises help us to train our eyes to relax. Training your eyes to relax will help improve vision today and for the rest of your life.
One such method was developed by a researcher of ophthalmology named Doctor William Bates. He surmised that we pick up most of our bad habits for our eyes while we are in school. When our eyes are looking at familiar objects they are generally relaxed whereas large amounts of new information day in and day out tires the mind and in turn causes undue strain on our eyes.
The Bates method was developed to teach the eyes how to improve and heal themselves. Bates' Method is actually quite simple. He created a large chart full of common shapes and letters. He placed the chart at the top of the classroom and encouraged the children to take a few moments to look at it whenever their learning got too overwhelming. This would refocus the mind and reduce the tension to strain the eyes. This method was implemented in a few schools and teachers noted that they saw a vast improvement in concentration and progress. However, the school board saw it as a distraction so the method was removed.
Most eye strengthening exercises are similar to the Bates method in that they are simple to do and will only take 2 or 3 minutes from your day. Although the Bates method was originally designed for children it can have just as much benefit for everyone. You can create your own chart and place it in the workplace as a distraction from the stresses of work and a chance to allow your eyes and mind to relax and recover.
