If you ask most people, they will tell you that they are trying to get ahead financially. Everyone understands that it's important to find a good job and work hard in order to succeed. Yet statistics show that many of us are overlooking one key to our financial success: our health.
Current health trends are troubling. The rates for obesity have more than doubled in the last 25 years. The number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes rose almost 30 percent in 5 years. Hundreds of thousands of die every year from cancer and heart disease.
Many people do not understand the link between good health and their finances. The fact is that good health is a vital part of achieving financial success. Whenever we make healthy changes in our habits and lifestyles, we increase our chances of reaching economic security.
The good news in all of this is that it is not hard to begin making healthy changes that increase your bottom line. The first step is to figure out how your unhealthy choices might be affecting you financially. Here are a few ways your health might be making you poor:
- Higher health care costs. Insurance companies charge more to patients who are overweight or who smoke. Some companies are starting to pass along higher insurance costs to their overweight employees. Also factor in the cost of diabetic medications and more frequent doctor visits.
- Unhealthy people earn less. Researchers found that smokers earn less money than non-smokers. Some companies even terminate employees who will not quit smoking. Studies have also shown that people who are overweight, especially women, make less money.
- The high cost of unhealthy choices. People spend intense amounts of money on cigarettes, junk food, and eating out. Just cutting back in these areas will not only make you more healthy, it can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars every year.
- Usually, unhealthy people do not live as long. That means they have less time to grow their savings. The longer you live an active, productive life, the more your heirs will benefit!
I do not know anyone who wants to be unhealthy. But our choices sometimes lead to poor health. All of us are aware that being unhealthy takes a physical and emotional toll on a person. But we need to remember that being unhealthy can also have a tremendous financial cost. One way to improve your economic situation is to improve your health!
