So, you’re getting a hamster? That’s awesome! A cozy cage is the first step to happy hamster parenthood, and a big part of that is the bedding. But how much do you really need? It’s easy to end up with a mountain of bedding or, even worse, not enough!
Don’t worry, I’m here to take the guesswork out of it. As a seasoned hamster parent and expert in all things hamster cages, I’ve got the inside scoop on calculating the perfect amount of bedding for your furry friend.
The Bedding Equation: No More Guessing Games
Forget eyeballing it! We’re going to use a simple formula to figure out exactly how much bedding you need.
Here’s the magic formula:
Length x Width x Bedding Height = Total Bedding (in cubic centimeters or cm3)
Let’s break it down with an example:
Imagine you have a spacious cage that’s 100cm long and 50cm wide. You want to give your hamster a luxurious 30cm of bedding to burrow in (because who doesn’t love a good burrow?).
-
Plug in the numbers: 100cm (length) x 50cm (width) x 30cm (bedding height) = 150,000 cm3
-
Convert to liters (optional): To get your answer in liters, simply divide by 1,000. In this case, 150,000 / 1,000 = 150 liters of bedding.
The Compaction Factor: Why More is Always Better
Here’s a pro tip: bedding compresses! When you buy a bag that says it expands to 50 liters, don’t be fooled. Once you pack it down in the cage for those crucial burrows, you’ll likely end up with only 30 liters or less of actual usable bedding.
My advice? Always buy an extra bag or two, just in case. Trust me, it’s better to have a little leftover than to run out in the middle of setting up your hamster’s dream home.
A Word on Fluffing: Don’t Be Fooled by the Bag
You’ll notice that bedding is often packed tightly in the bag. The expansion volume they list usually assumes you’ve fluffed it up. In reality, you’ll be compacting it for burrow stability, so that 27-liter bag might only give you 12-15 liters of usable space.
Still Not Sure How Deep to Go?
Choosing the right bedding depth depends on your hamster species and their burrowing needs. Check out my other post, “[Choosing the Best Substrate + a Discussion on Softwood](link to your blog post on substrate)”, for a deep dive into bedding types and ideal depths.
