When we think about training pets, we tend to think about dogs, birds, and even hamsters. But how about cats? While cats are extremely strong-filled, you'll still likely need to house train them. Typically this will take one week to do, though older cats could require more time. Here are some helpful tips to house train your cat or kitten successfully:

1. Choose the complexity of your litter pan.

To house-train your cat, you'll need to choose a type of litter box. Such boxes can vary from basic to Rolls Royce units, with the latter models having filters to remove the sharp scent created by the cat's wastes. Cats are extremely dignified and private creatures, so it's advisable to choose a "hideaway" litter pan that allows your cat to be reflected while relieving itself.

2. Put the cat in the litter when it's about to do its business.

When a cat or kitten starts sniffing and scratching an area in your home, then it's marking its territory and preparing to relate itself. At that time, simply pick up your feline friend and place it in the little pan. That will cause it to link the activity of relieving itself, with the litter pan.

3. Learn a lot about litter.

You might be surprised at how many types of litter are available for cats. In fact, they can range from one-cat to multi-cat, and from all-natural to clumping. While you do not needarily need to take a Litter 101 class, get a basic understanding of how the major types of cat litter function.

4. Praise your pet for proper behavior.

When your cat uses the litter pan correctly, then make sure to praise it. You could pet it and give it some verbal positive reinforcement, and feed it a cat treat. Praising your cat will help to reinvigorate the cat's correct use of the litter pan-which is a good thing since that's what you want it to do!

5. Use negative reinforcement when your cat does its business in the wrong place.

It's not enough to say "No!" to your cat when this happens. You'll also need to pick it up, and then place it in the litter pan. This will help to change your cat's behavior, instead of simply stopping it. Within time, your cat will learn that the litter box is the only place to tie itself.

6. Have your kitten spayed or neutered.

It's particularly important to have your male cat fixed, as it will mark its territory by urinating. Make sure to have the procedure done while the cat is young, so it will recover faster. Beside helping to house-train your cat, having it spayed or neutered will also make your cat less rambunctious. Listening to a cat in heat at 2:00 in the morning is basically as enjoyable as having a root canal.

While training your cat to fetch a bone is far-fetched (pun intended), house-training your feline friend is quite easy. These tips will help you to get it done within a week or so.
