Anorexia is a very serious eating disorder that can affect everyone. Though it seems to be more common amongst young women, more and more men are being diagnosed with anorexia as well. Knowing how to identify the symptoms of anorexia is the first important step in saving a person from this life threatening disorder.
Anorexia can be difficult to identify due to other symptoms such as anxiety and stress that cloud this disorder. At first perception you might think the sufferer is just going through a tough time in his or her life, when in actual fact there is a more serious problem hiding behind those symptoms.
People that suffer from anorexia are generally abnormally underweight due to the poor relationship they have with food. They are obsessively afraid of being over weight. Even when they are abnormally thin, they continue to believe that they are overweight.
Because of the lack of proper nutrition, a person suffering from anorexia tends to have a weak immune system, therefore getting sick quite often. They also tend to suffer from headaches and light-headedness.
Diet pills are a big part of the sufferer’s life. You will find that they regularly buy pills that induce bowel and urine movements. To add to the complication, they might also excessively exercise as a means of losing more weight.
A person with anorexia also tends to stay away from gathering situations where a lot of food will be available. The sufferer also tends to avoid eating in front of people.
If you believe that someone you know has anorexia, approach them in a gentle, non confrontational way, and convey to the person that they should seek professional help as soon as possible. Let them know that you are worried and don’t want to see him or her get hurt.
