There is perhaps nothing more that a hamster owner enjoys than watching their pet run around or playing with a homemade toy that s/he made.
Homemade hamster toys come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and you might actually be surprised to learn that your hamster has its own personal favorites that you will discover over time.
Here are a few ideas to get you started.
One of the first things that you should understand is that any homemade hamster toys that are used in the cage should always be made of items that are perfectly safe for your animal. Cardboard boxes are fine, but any tape or staples in the boxes could be harmful to your dwarf hamster and should not be used.
You can also try using tubes of various sizes, such as empty paper towel tubes or perhaps empty oatmeal containers. Your hamster will love running through these various tubes and chewing its way out of them at times.
Another thing that you may want to consider is adding a little bit of food into some of these toys in order to make it a little bit more interesting for your hamster. For example, you can fill a small tube that is folded on the end with some hamster food and suspended that treat from the top of the cage.
Then create an obstacle course inside of the cage that your hamster will have to use in order to get to the tube. After chewing on the tube (which it will do with pleasure), it will be rewarded with a shower of food pellets or treats.
