There seem to be more dentists nowadays than there are gas stations. It seems like you look around on every corner and boom there is another dentist. What becomes difficult is how to know who is the best dentist both price wise and skill wise. My mother was a victim of a bad dentist who basically told my grandma that she needed to get 15 fillings. Later on of course they realized that he was just trying to make as much money as he could but unfortunately the damage was done. The first thing you might want to think about is how many patients the dentist has and how long they have been in business. Now if the practice was just recently bought by a new dentist then this does not apply but for the most part established dentists who do a good job will have been around for a while and will have quite an extensive list of clients. Good dentists will not only have a long list of clients but also a long list of long term clients or clients who have been around for quite a long time.
The other thing to think about is what the dentists primary goals are? Does he or she consult their patients on hwo to protect their teeth and what they can do to prevent cavities? Do they celebrate with you when you have gone another year without problems? Do they do whatever they can to help you prevent problems? Good dentists do not want you to have teeth problems and will be genuenly sorry when you do have issues that show up. So pay attention to their attitude toward dental issues or the lack of dental issues.
Last of all I would pay attention to the dentists prices for check-ups, major procedures, or other dental needs. Good dentists will not be looking to price gouge you but instead will try to work with you in getting you a good price. Dentists have to be able to cover their expenses but not in one fatal swoop.
These are just a few ideas I have on how to pick a good dentist but if you follow these steps you should have much better luck than my grandma did in picking a dentist that not only does great work but is also honest and fair in price.
