Dwarf hamsters are the most popular type of hamster, and for good reason – they're extremely playful, sociable, and lovable, making them perfect for kids.
There are 4 main types of dwarfs, each with their own personalities, characteristics, and appearance. Using this guide you will be able to easily tell them apart:
1. Campbell's
Also known as Djungarian Hamsters, these are characterized by their gray-brown fur with a distinct black stripe running down the middle of their backs. They are also very small, even smaller than some other dwarf hamsters, at around 3-4 inches in length.
2. Winter White
These sometimes have white fur, and sometimes brown. Also known as the Siberian Dwarf, their name comes from the cold climates where they live in the wild. They can be easily identified by their furry feet and very short tail, both of which are designed to keep them warm.
3. Roborovski
These are known to mature much faster than other dwarf hamsters. After being born, they will develop whiskers after just a couple of days, and will begin to grow fur within a week.
4. Chinese
Their bodies are much more long and slender than other types of dwarf hamster, and they also have a long tail. They are noted for being highly active as youngsters, but more calmer when older. In some states these hamsters are actually considered to be a pest, requiring you to obtain a special license to own or breed them.
Dwarf hamsters make perfect pets, but each type is slightly different and suited to different types of people. Now you should have no trouble telling them apart, so you can make sure you get the type which is ideal for you.
