What exactly is ‘sexing’ dwarf hamsters? No, it’s not some new slang term for breeding. Sexing dwarf hamsters is the process of determining whether the hamsters are male or female. This is important for a variety of reasons, one of them being the need to separate them to avoid unplanned breeding.
How does sexing work? Males and females of all species have their unique differences. With some animals it’s more noticeable than with others. For example with elephant seals, the males are very large and has a trunk like that of an elephant whereas the females are small and don’t have these trunk like noses. With hamsters there’s no real distinguishing ‘trunk’ or trait. In fact, sometimes it’s even difficult for a veterinarian to determine the sex of a dwarf hamster. But there are differences you can observe between the males and females, some of them are behavioral differences and others are physical characteristics. Although it may sometimes be difficult to distinguish between male and female hamsters, there are foolproof techniques that can be used. These techniques are the proven methods of sexing dwarf hamsters and are the best ways to distinguish between the boys and girls.
The differences between male and female dwarf hamsters include subtle differences in behavior as well as physical attributes. One example is with Chinese dwarf hamsters. With Chinese hamsters, the females are noticeably more aggressive and territorial than the males. Another difference between male and female dwarf hamsters is with their scent glands. Scent glands are more prominent in the males. This is because the males use these sweat glands to mark their territory with their scent whereas females don’t do this. The sweat gland is located on the belly (if you want to look for it) but this is far from the best way to distinguish between males and females. Although these two differences between males and females can put you on the right track in sexing dwarf hamsters, they are by no means definitive.
The best way to tell between a male and female is with proper sexing methods. One example is looking at the nipples. Only female dwarf hamsters have nipples and this is one of the sure ways to sexing dwarf hamsters.
