When baby dwarf hamsters are born, hamster owners tend to be very curious and excited in seeing them. A lot of pet owners even want to hold these little critters as soon as they are born. Who wouldn’t be eager to handle them directly when they are irresistibly cute?
No one can hide from the fact that it’s normal for people to get curious when there’s a newborn child. They want to see how the infant looks like and are much interested in the sex of the newborn. Other than that, they are also curious on how big and heavy he or she is.
Pet owners, especially aspiring hamster owners, ask these questions a lot too when dwarf hamsters are born. There’s no question about it as newborn infants and baby hamsters have some things in common. They have developmental stages and they all need to be properly taken cared of as they are fragile.
Hamster pups are born without any fur. They grow their fur on the first 7 days and their eyes will open approximately 11 to 12 days after birth. After about 2 weeks, these baby dwarf hamsters will start to consume regular portions of solid food items but they will still rely on their mothers for nutrients until they are 18-21 days old. Once they are 3 weeks or almost a month old, they can already eat regular hamster foods like oatmeal, seed, wheat germ and fresh vegetables.
During this time, their mothers will naturally start to take care of them less often. Once this happens, it is advisable that hamster owners feed the pups with tiny amounts of cucumber and red apple as they help baby hamsters avoid dehydration. Also, they can be perfectly weaned from their mothers and be transferred to another cage with same sex siblings these times. Female hamsters are very territorial and more aggressive than male hamsters so they might end up fighting most of the time.
On the other hand, taking care of baby dwarf hamsters is a lot different compared to taking care of newborn babies. Once baby hamsters are born, human contact is absolutely a “No, no!” Hamster owners should never touch the newborn pups. Aside from the fact that they’re extremely fragile, the act of holding them will also affect or change their scents. If you touch the baby hamsters, their mothers would feel frightened and will try to defend the newborns. Some mother hamsters will not even recognize her newborns and would not feed them at all. The worse thing that could happen is she will just eat her hamster pups.
With these facts, it’s very important that hamster owners only try to touch the pups two weeks after they are born. The mother hamsters can take care of her newborn pups as it’s in her nature to feed, clean and take care of them. Aside from the fact that hamster mothers leave or eat their offspring if they’re touched by humans, it’s just sad that they too eat their offspring once they feel that their new pups are not getting the right kind of nutrition during the first week. It’s still part of their animal instinct. They don’t want their newborn pups to suffer from malnutrition.
With that, it is imperative for the owners to prepare everything for the mother before the babies are born. Preparations would include providing nutritious food items, specifically protein rich foods, water right bedding, cages, tissue or toilet papers for them to create nests for the babies and more. It’s also very crucial that hamster lovers avoid disturbing the mothers as much as possible. If hamster owners want to take a closer look at the baby dwarf hamsters, they need to be certain that they don’t stay for too long so as to avoid stressing the hamster mother. If cleaning their cage is unavoidable, pet owners should never touch the nest and avoid making too much noise.

People are also advised to do a lot of research to make sure the safety of both parents and baby hamsters are not compromised. It’s just like loving and taking good care of some newborn infants.
