Many individuals have fallen victim to the quick weight loss promises of crash diets. One popular diet requires skipping meals and just drinking juice or mineral water. However, these diets are a very unhealthy way to lose weight because you literally starve your body of essential nutrients. Once you get off the diet, you start binging and overeating to make up for the long days that you haven’t been eating properly.

If you get hungry in between meals, it is better to just eat 5 to 6 smaller but healthy meals a day. To burn off more calories, you should also exercise regularly.

Smoking

One of the most bizarre methods of losing weight is smoking. The rationale behind this is that when a person smokes, signals are sent to the brain, causing increased metabolism and appetite suppression. However, smoking by itself causes a variety of health problems, including lung disease and cancer. Studies have shown that smoking as a means to lose weight increases the incidence of serious gastrointestinal ailments, such as ulcers and stomach cancer.

Laxatives

Laxatives are one of the most unhealthy ways of losing weight. It involves the intake of pills, powders, teas and other preparations that hasten the transit of food through the digestive tract. In fact, certain celebrities have been actively endorsing laxative preparations for weight loss, not knowing their harmful effects. Many individuals who have tried laxatives for weight loss often complain of abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Purging

Even more dangerous than using laxatives is purging. This unhealthy behavior involves forcing oneself to vomit out food that he or she has eaten. This is often seen in anorexics and bulimics. After overeating or bingeing on foods and snacks, they would stick their fingers down their throats so that they vomit. Purging can lead to serious damage to the esophagus and the stomach.

Skipping Meals

A very common method by which some people lose weight is by skipping meals. They eat heavy breakfasts but miss lunch or dinner. The problem with skipping meals is that you are starving your body of essential nutrients needed for it to function throughout the day. People who try to lose weight by skipping meals often suffer from gastrointestinal problems, foremost among them being ulcer.
